Since those are facts, most people in the long run come to recognize them as facts; and therefore, in the long run, come to perceive them as principles of justice. That is to say, they come to recognize it as a rule of fairness (’it’s only fair’) that people who pay similar costs, take similar risks, and make similar investments should receive similar rewards; and people who are dissimilar in those respects should receive dissimilar rewards.

Let us refer to all the costs, risks, and time and resources you and I invest in an action for the sake of some reward, as our ‘inputs’. Then we can say, following George C Homans (1974: p 249) and J Stacey Adams (1965), that fairness prevails between you and me to the degree that-
